ROTW: Woven Bones - In and Out and Back Again

WOVEN BONES - In and Out and Back Again (Hozac Records)
When the tempo is slowed down, Woven Bones can sound like Jesus & Mary Chain in the raw. When the tempo is back up and a few surf riffs are thrown in, Woven Bones perform in the spirit of The Cramps. In and Out and Back Again is a well mastered lo-fi garage record that works well within the oxymoron. The deep damp basement reverb found on each of these nine tracks adapts well to each style that Woven Bones perform and often helps simplify the diversity, thus smoothing out the whole record under one cohesive sound. The wall bouncing echo helps makes the rockabilly-ish guitar riffs come off less retro while garage/punk chord progressions feel less sloppy.
The only thing that feels awkward about praising this record is knowing that there is probably hundreds of bands that have mastered this formula and there is really no way of knowing that Woven Bones is the best of what they do. Personally, I discovered Woven Bones on satellite radio in regular rotation and bought this album the next day, thus proving once again why it's beneficial to be on a good label with a working promo department. Otherwise, I am not sure if Woven Bones would had fell on my lap through word of mouth or MySpace browsing.
