The first thing to note is that Hellbound Glory is a very talented country/western band with a authentic outlaw sound. Only their second album, Old Highs and New Lows goes beyond the typical punk-band-learns-to-play-country trend - coming off more like a veteran band that has pissed in as many honky tonk men's room stalls as the very same legends who have influenced them.
Most of the songs here are about opiate addiction, which may be where the comparisons to all those country greats end. Possibly overdone in traditional ol' country boy irony, "One Way Track Marks", "Why Take The Pain (When I Can Take Pain Pills)", and "Too Broke to Overdose" are among a few of the song titles that help reinforce Hellbound Glory's claim as the inventors of "Scumbag Country".
Old Highs and New Lows has it's fair share of cliches, including (but not limited to) everything from southern folk charm, honky tonk call outs, and vintage slide guitar riffs. Beyond what the casual listener deems as stereotypical, this record proves that Hellbound Glory could hold their own as a mid-carder at the next Stagecoach Festival if they choose to.
