The Number are a Scottish band who are influenced by the who's who ofalternative rock. They are possibly best described as aless-experimental version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but with heavy melodicbasslines. Singer LisaCruickshank has the fierce panic and desperation that hasmade Karen O's voice universally-distinguishable while maintaining arange similar to Nina Diaz and Dolores O'Riordan. Each of these fourtracks have excellent guitar melodies and are arranged well enough tosound full and less lo-fi than your typical Yeah Yeah Yeahs track.
Judging The Number's overall sound based on four tracks may lead toperceptions about the band that may be outdated next year around thistime as the they mature. For right now, I can honestly say the TheNumber leans more towards goth-rock than mainstream alternative, sometimes reminding me of many female-led "goth" bands of the 90s that havecome and gone. The EP's cover art has a bit of a dark quality that mayor may not have influenced my opinion. Despite the hidden ghostliness, The Number gives meenough faith to give a full length album a chance once it has beenrecorded and released.
