ROTW: Spoon - Transference

SPOON - TRANSFERENCE (Merge Records)

The seventh album by Britt Daniel and company is a stripped down exhibition of no-frills Texas soul-rock. For a band that comes from a part of Americana known for it's BBQ as much as it's music, Transference delivers like a piping hot plate of the finest grilled baby-backs basted with nothing finer than ketchup. Spoon has obviously moved from indie-rock darlings to a band that can rock both festivals and honky-tonk dancefloors on any blues-rock-jam night with a fresh heart and reckless abandon. Nothing to complain about anywhere within these 11 songs, although some may smell the staleness when Britt out-britts himself on a few of the more "hit waiting to happen" numbers.

With a Billboard debut this past week of #4 - with barely any significant radio airplay - we could be possibly heading to a new format of music: Alternative Album Rock. And Spoon could very well be the face of this format.
