Vivian Girls take me back to a time in my life when I read MRR religiously and bought 7"s and various comp CDs on a weekly basis at Stinkweeds Record Exchange, usually based on cover art and label reputation. Almost every punk record that I bought in the early 90s was lo-fi by default because, on virtue of a true D.I.Y. ethic, what you were hearing was the best production those independent bands could afford. Although I can't quite pinpoint a direct reference when describing this all female trio from Brooklyn, I know that it goes back to that pre-Summer Of Punk era (1991 - 1994) and something either self-released or on any indie below Lookout on the punk label hierarchy chain (KillRockStars, K Records, etc). Like a band Steve Eye would throw on as a last minute opener for one of his many huge punk events in at the DPC, back when I and my fellow Phoenicians would travel down to Tucson to fill the void left when the Silver Dollar Club closed in early '94. What I am describing is a long lost time period of independent rock, and any band that can help me remember that part of my post-adolescent youth is alright in my book.

Everything Goes Wrong
is the second full length album by Vivian Girls, who are just a few months shy of celebrating three years together. Don't let the critics with short history tell you this is simply "indie rock" or "lo-fi noise pop". This is punk rock, borderline melodic hardcore perhaps. Not as aggressive as bands like Bikini Girl or Bratmobile, Vivian Girls' harmonious lo-fi sound emulates more of a soft-core version of the 90s RiotGrrl movement. From there I am not sure who to recommend this album to, however it is making the rounds based major praise around the blogosphere. I just wish Everything Goes Wrong could reach the ears of older folks who grew up in late 80s/early 90s punk and hardcore like myself.
