ANTI-SNOB RADAR: Indie Rock News From Around The World (09/10/09)
- A couple of new internet radio shows to tell you about. On September 2nd, Westley Allen (aka Big Vinny, singer/guitarist for The Plainfield Butchers) debuted his weekly Erratic Radio on KWSS 106.7FM in Phoenix. Named after his boutique record label, Allen will be spinning punk/garage/new wave/whatever while featuring live performances every week. Plans to simulcast shows from the Yucca Tap Room is also in the works. Erratic Radio streams worldwide at www.kwss1067.com and can be heard every Tuesday from 8-10pm Arizona time. Each broadcast will be archived at http://www.xxxmisfit.com/erratic_radio/
- John Heathenworld's career in Internet Radio goes back to the pioneering days of streaming music on the web. Not only was he involved in the revolutionary Radio Free Kansas, but immediately after his move to Phoenix in 1997 he got involved with CRUX, home of Arizona's first ever internet radio broadcasts. After CRUX lost it's funding, John took his experience to create Heathen Radio which was a series of pre-recorded programs that streamed in the Real Audio format (think podcasting six years before iPods - streamed, not downloaded). John was a mentor to me for my first experiences in Internet radio and I have always followed his career (including Knot Radio among others). That is why I am excited to announce that John has re-launched Heathen World Radio on RadioPhoenix.org. The show features his (un)usual blend of experimental sounds, international garage rock, underground noise, and more. His program this past Monday even featured some Middle Eastern electronica. Catch it every Monday from 8-10pm (AZ time).
- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club will be releasing a live DVD on November 10, 2009. The 2-DVD, 1-CD set will be made possible through efforts from BRMC's own Abstract Dragon label along with help from Vagrant Records. Titled Live, the set will feature clips from various European concerts from their 2007 tour along with some behind the scenes footage shot during the Howl sessions and the making of the "Weapon of Choice" music video.
- Nowadays it seems like Scion sponsors more music festivals than they make actual cars. But that is okay, because the lineup for the Scion Garage Fest in Portland looks awesome. Jay Reatard, The Dirtbombs, Roky Erikson, Jack Oblivian, Kid Congo (Gun Club, Cramps), Black Lips, The Spits, King Khan & BBQ Show and many more are scheduled to appear October 17th for an all day event. Details HERE.
- Select new releases to check out: Polvo (Merge), Vivian Girls (In The Red), and Yo La Tengo.
