A Follow Up To Last Week's Great Debate: MJ vs. OJ

Last week I proposed an interesting question in the wake of Michael Jackson's untimely death. Here is a quick review:

"Michael Jackson had a remarkable music career. He also was charged with child sex abuse. He went to trial and  - although he was assumed guilty in the public eye - was declared innocent by a jury. Since his death, his life has been celebrated and remembered for his music.

OJ Simpson had a remarkable football career in the NFL. Later in life he was charged with the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend. OJ was also assumed to be guilty by the public but he was declared "not guilty" by a jury as well.

When OJ Simpson dies, will he be remembered as fondly as Michael Jackson has this past week?"

Here are some of the answers I received from around the web where I proposed this question.

1. Of course, directly here on ANTI-SNOB, local punk/country DJ Johnny Volume commented "NO! A HELL NO even"

2. The AZPUNK Withdrawal message board is a destination that I posts topics, rants, and comments on periodically. It was created to replace the actual long-lived and active AZPUNK.com message board that had well over 1,000 users and new threads posted frequently. AZPWITHDRAWAL is a bit less active yet populated with the more intelligent of the AZPUNK bunch. Here are some comments .

"2pint" posted "MJ was acquitted of criminal charges, but paid $22 MILLION as a settlement rather than go to civil court in the accusations of sexual assault. Some might see that amount as an admission of guilt (especially knowing that MJ was on his way to going broke). OJ was acquitted of criminal charges (murder), but had more than $700million judged against him in civil court in the accusations of wrongful death of Nicole Brown-Simpson. The LAPD, prosecutors, and forensics dept really blew it in the OJ case. But in the Vegas case of assault and robbery, he fucked himself on tape. MJ's sexual assault was a flimsy case by nature, with really no physical evidence."

While Mikey Wretch from the Phoenix band Japanese Monsters proclaimed "Dude this is apples and oranges!". After explaining why & how Michael Jackson never was convicted, Mikey then answered "No...because Michael had\has fans all over the world."

3. On our myspace bulletin, Cherry Bomb (drummer of the Green Lady Killers), posts "I don't think quite as fondly, but I have noticed that everybody has seemed to forget about those gross charges...his life has instead been glorified, and of course he did have an amazing music career."

4. On Yahoo Answers, for which the precise demographic of participants is more difficult to gauge, I received the following comments.

"Babycakes" says "Yes, because an abusive man who did nothing for the world should beheld higher than a man who did so much good and was a true icon.". Okay, that was voted the best answer and I am pretty sure Babycakes was being sarcastic. One user who goes by "inaijrud" answered a simple "Hell No" citing the source of "Common Sense", while Alicia Renee commented "NO MJ has contributed to 37 different charities and has also donated over 50 million dollars more than any celebrity. He has changed the music and has inspired all of hip hop today. Nobody will come close to what MJ has achieved. MJ was known worldwide OJ wasn't i mean like MJ sold out china a couple months ago in a matter of hours and he did that at the age of 50. MJ was the best there could be OJ wont and can't come close"

5. Here is my personal take. I agree the answer is "No", but I want to dig deeper into the social issues of why that isI am curious if people are going to try to distinguish different levels of celebrity or dare to say being accused of murder is worst than being accused of a sex crime with a child.

Yes, Michael was bigger than OJ (OJ wasn't exactly small time). But then again, taking inconsideration that both were role models for African American youths before their alleged crimes, I would argue that more kids looked up and inspired to be like OJ Simpson than Michael Jackson.

And, yes, Murder is the greatest crime of all. But it all depends how and who is perceiving the hierarchy of crimes.
If you had a choice...let's say someone paid you a million dollars to spend a week in prison but you had a choice between going in for MURDER? or CHILD RAPE? Which would you choose?

Although Murder is the most severe, it can - in some cases - be justified (Self Defense, Vigilantism, etc). Child Sex Crimes WILL NEVER , nor should they ever, be justified in anyone's eyes.
