ROTW: Metric - Fantasies

METRIC - FANTASIES (Redeye Label)

Another album enters my probable Best of 2009 list. Canada's Metric reminds me of Ladytron with more guitars. The first song that caught my ear was the last track, "Stadium Love", which recalls memories of some 1990s female led alt-rock bands like Elastica and Veruca Salt. I am not sure about the selection of singles. I can think of atleast 3 songs that are better, perhaps more radio friendly than the far-too-repetitive "Help I'm Alive" or the electro-sappy "Gimme Sympathy". I do, however, feel that "Sick Muse" is one of the stronger songs on this album.

Overall, Fantasies is a well balanced dance rock album free of any hipster indie rock posturing. It's quirky, colorful, yet very low key.
