Selling vinyl on eBay
So I decided to unload some vinyl. I think it's time to decrease my somewhat modest collection. Most of my friends who collect vinyl have collections that far overshadow mine. I think there was a time when I favored CDs a bit more and then I started collecting mp3s, but I still believe that vinyl is the primo format. And I have made an effort of doing the reverse vinyl+mp3 model. I actually download most of my music through my membership with eMusic. My favorites are then put on a list and when time/funds are available I will go out and buy the album a 2nd time on vinyl. The irony in this is that most of my vinyl purchases come with mp3 download cards, which are then given to a friend.

So far I only sold one 7". The 6 band compilation This Ain't No Fucking Melodic Punk featuring The Loudmouths and very early Turbonegro. Let that baby go for $5.00 (ouch!)

Pricing these pieces of music and art is a task and concept in itself. I search both current and completed auctions on eBay for similar records, while scoping the sellers on Gemm to see what the piece is going for among U.S. sellers. From there I take that data and come up with a ballpark average while altering the opening asking price based on the perception that I am a novice seller who can afford to undercut the big sellers by a few bucks.
The data, however, changes daily. A few weeks back no one on Gemm was selling a vinyl copy of Operation Ivy Energy while two auctions on eBay had an American seller asking for $125 for a first pressing, while a Japanese seller was selling a 2nd pressing for $50.00. Two weeks later there were quite a few sellers, with much smaller asking bids.
