What timing...y'know with the Olympics and all...
Towards the end of last year...and right before the demise of Blanche Davidian...Mike Hawk and Nikki Seven often joked about doing a side project devoted to their love of shoegaze bands. At least I thought it was a joke. But then Nikki and I would send myspace links to each other of neo-psychedelic bands and eventually I realizes that the two glam-punk guitar heroes were serious. In early 2008, I received a myspace friends request with a band name I was familiar with; THE BEIJING TANGS. It was a name used on the Blanche Davidian discography that suggested the two bands did a rare out of print split 7" back in 2000 (an attempt to buffer the back OOP catalog). Around the same time, former drummer of The Girls (Dirtnap Records) Mario Martusciello relocated back to Scottsdale, AZ to start a new coffee roasting company while looking for a new band. Mario hooked up with Mike and Nikki (Mario and Mike were in The Sport Model together back in the mid-90s) and have so far posted three new songs on their myspace page. The guitars are heavy and artificially melodic. The vocals are lost in space. It is what you would expect from three seasoned musicians inspired by early Dandy Warhols, Ride, and The Cranes.
